The National Civic League is excited to announce that applications are now open for the prestigious All-America City Award. In a time when threats to democracy are affecting the very heart of local civic life, this year's theme resonates: ‘Strengthening Democracy through Local Action and Innovation.’

Since 1949, the National Civic League has designated towns, tribes, cities, counties, and regions as All-America Cities for their outstanding civic accomplishments. The award, bestowed yearly on 10 communities, recognizes the work of communities in using inclusive civic engagement to address critical issues and forging stronger connections among residents, nonprofits, academic institutions, businesses, and government leaders.

As the 2024 elections approach, many communities are experiencing some of the same threats to democracy we see at the national and international levels, including polarization, economic inequality, anti-democratic activities, and racial and ethnically motivated violence. We are at a decisive moment in history, and strengthening and improving democracy begins locally. When people have meaningful opportunities to help make decisions and solve problems, they build trust, create a stronger sense of community, and help address important challenges.

The 2024 All-America City Award will recognize communities that are finding innovative ways to equitably engage community members in activities that strengthen local democracy, like making it easier to vote, engage in community affairs, and serve in leadership roles.

Applicants will be asked to demonstrate innovation, impact, equity and inclusiveness, civic engagement, and cross sector collaboration by discussing the strength of their civic capital—the formal and informal relationships, networks, and capacities they use to make decisions and solve problems—and to provide examples of community-driven projects/programs that have strengthened local democracy.

Mark your calendar, the deadline to apply is February 13, 2024. In March 2024, top 20 finalists will be announced and will have the opportunity to convene in Denver, Colorado, June 7-9, 2024, to showcase their community's achievements at the All-America City Award event. During the event, teams of residents, nonprofit, business, and government leaders, alongside young change-makers from communities nationwide, will exchange insights, soak up wisdom from national thought leaders, and boldly present their narratives to a jury of nationally recognized civic leaders. The grand finale? The much-anticipated awards ceremony, crowning the year's 10 All-America Cities. This transformational experience equips, inspires, and champions leaders and communities to achieve more than they ever believed possible.

The All-America City Award shines a spotlight on the incredible work taking place in communities across the country. By celebrating the best in local innovation, civic engagement and cross-sector collaboration, the All-America City Award reminds us of the boundless potential within every community to conquer challenges and usher in genuine transformation
