Beyond the Basics - a Brief Q & A:

1. Describe your community in five words or less.

Well that is an easy one.  All I have to do is borrow a page from our tourism department--Newport News: Where Great Things Are Happening.  In reality, like with all communities, things are more complex.  There are indeed a lot of great things occurring in the City but we also have challenges that we are trying to address.

2. What is your community currently working on?

There is lot going on in Newport News at the moment!  The City continues to work on two major development projects.  The first of these projects is the Tech Center in City Center and the second is the Brooks Crossing development in our Southeast Community.  Two large scale planning efforts are also underway.  The first is the revision of our Comprehensive Plan, Framework for the Future.  The second is a regional transportation plan which has the potential to significantly improve mobility on the Peninsula and throughout Hampton Roads.

3. What are you hoping to achieve by being an Alliance Ambassador?

The City is currently embarking on an effort to better utilize the Alliance and, in the process, promote innovation throughout the organization.  I, along with Assistant City Manager Alan Archer, am leading this effort and I believe it is important that I serve as one of the City’s Ambassadors.  In time, we hope to expand the ranks of our Ambassadors throughout the organization.

4. Outside of local government innovation, what is one of your hobbies?

Keeping my 22-month old child from seriously injuring himself and destroying the house seems to be another full time job at the moment!  In the small amount of free time remaining I can usually be found performing DIY projects around our house or, if I’m lucky, reading.
