Are You Asking Your Police and Fire Chiefs the Right Questions?

  • How many police and firefighters do you really need?

  • How well are your public safety departments performing?

  • Are "officers per 1,000" and "number of calls" really meaningful measures?

  • Does "MORE" and “FASTER” really translate into “BETTER” AnD “SAFER”?

  • Are you being told that adding more paramedics will improve medical outcomes?

  • Do you need help controlling the costs of your public safety workers' staffing and hourly schedules?

WHAT YOU WILL COVER

As a local government manager, you have to make policy decisions based on information you get from the different departments. The toughest departments from which to get accurate, measurable information are the police and fire departments. Police and fire chiefs have their own jargon—and few city managers have training in emergency services management. The key is asking the right questions so that you get the right answers.

Join Leonard Matarese, ICMA’s director of research and public safety programs,  and  Thomas Wieczorek, Director of the ICMA Center for Public Safety Management for an intensive full day workshop designed to give you the tools and skills to understand the actual needs of your jurisdiction public safety agencies and to evaluate their performance.

IN THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO:

  • ESTABLISH GOALS AND PRIORITIES

Learn what you need to know to analyze and quantify what the workloads are in the police and fire departments.

Identify whether personnel are allocated correctly to meet the workload demand.

  • GET THE METRICS YOU NEED TO ACCURATELY QUANTIFY SERVICE NEEDS

Get your police department to be able to tell you what percentage of its officers’ time is tied up on actual calls.

Identify the number of firefighters and amount of equipment that is really necessary; deal with low use of firefighters and;

Learn what the Evidence Based EMS systems should look like.

  • MAXIMIZE HUMAN AND CAPITAL RESOURCES

Identify performance problems, and apply strategies to follow the path of continuous improvement.

This intensive, full day workshop will provide you the keys to reduce costs and improve services by asking the right questions so that you get the right answers.

(This workshop addresses Practice Group 3 - Functional and Operational Expertise and Planning)
