Technology continues to boost the ways that city and county managers are able to lead their communities. In El Paso County, CO, a solution was needed to quicken response time during disasters while having to face the difficulties of rigid terrain. This lead to the implementation of the county’s mobile advanced communications (or MAC) vehicle. The MAC adds a news layer to disaster response in which IT can now be used to combat emergency scenarios in other ways than just maps. While capable of 30 mph, the MAC also is able to connect with a separate vehicle built for tough terrain that carries communication boosting tools. While costing around $250,000, the MAC also has a generator that can power a small town. Its functionality gives emergency services a new ability in that it can also serve as a resource center for evacuees.
