The Economic Census is the official five-year measure of American business and the economy, which has been providing data points since 1810. It is the most comprehensive source of information about American businesses from the national to the local level.

The Economic Census is currently being distributed to more than 4 million businesses representing all U.S. locations and industries. Respondents are required by law to provide a range of operational and performance data for their companies by February 12, 2013.

The Economic Census provides detailed statistics that are important for communities. Local governments rely on this information for economic development, key economic reports, business decisions, and strategic planning. Local governments can compare statistics for the industries in their community to identify opportunities for growth and can also compare statistics for the industries in their community to neighboring communities, their metro area and state, and to national totals to identify market share and trends.

Good public policy depends on accurate information. To help businesses in your community prepare for this economic census, visit the Census Bureau.
