ICMA joins NLC, NACo, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors in praising the passage of the Marketplace Fairness Act in the Senate. Passage of the legislation in the Senate is an important first step in leveling the playing field so that merchants collect sales taxes owed, whether the purchase is made on Main Street or over the Internet.

It is not clear whether or not the House will take up the bill. The National Governors' Association issued a statement reminding House members that voting for the legislation does not increase taxes. This legislation has no effect on federal revenues or the federal budget, but does allow states to enforce their own laws.
