On the Knowledge Network we receive many, many questions, but one of the most common questions is about getting your first local government job. In this economy, getting that first job after college or graduate school can be very daunting, and with fewer entry-level positions available in local governments across the country, it sometimes can feel impossible.
However, ICMA has many great resources that can help you embark on an exciting and fulfilling career in local government.
- “Your First Five Years in Local Government: Getting Started” is a comprehensive checklist for planning your first five years in local government management and positioning yourself for future success.
- Many local government officials responded to this recently asked question about applying for jobs after earning an MPA, and they provided valuable insights into how they obtained their first postgraduation jobs.
- Responses this previously asked question will tell you everything you need to know about preparing for your first local government job.
- Check out the Career Compass series, This series of short articles gives tips and advice for young professionals in local government.
- “Breaking into Local Government” is a wide-ranging document that includes case studies, interviews, and advice for how to get your foot in the door.
- ICMA’s Career Network is an area of the website that contains career resources for those at every stage of their local government careers. It can help you get started in local government and will continue to be a great resource as you progress in your career.
In addition to these specific resources, I would encourage anyone interested in breaking into local government to stay tuned in on the Knowledge Network for fellowship and internship opportunities offered by various organizations and local governments throughout the year. These can often be found in the Jobs section.
If you have any additional questions, try asking them in our Ask and answer section of the website or contacting local government officials with the jobs you aspire to have someday!
