Tomorrow is Make a Difference Day. It is one of the largest days of national service all year, according to its promoters and participants.
It’s been around since 1992 but when we heard it about it, we thought of our community heroes and our city, town, and county managers. Every day is Make a Difference Day for them.
In fact, if you ask them why they chose the field of local government public service, most will say: “because I have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people in my community every day.” Many of them considered and even tried different professions but as one of our city managers says: “When you can solve a resident’s problem on the same day you learn about it…there’s no better feeling.”
We invite you to listen to what some of our managers and the people they work with to make Life, Well Run have to say. In their own words they describe the importance they place on improving the lives of their neighbors by doing things like picking up the recycling to planning a new park. Each of the ten community hero profiles are a snapshot of service.
Local government leaders also talk about the rewards of a career in public service at the city and county level in the careers section of the website.
