The day after our arrival in Beijing, our Teaching Assistants (TAs) and some students met us with Professor Ting and took us to breakfast at the canteen in the basement of our hotel. Breakfast is porridge, bau dumplings and a LOT of pickles.
We’re here in Beijing as guest lecturers at the China University of Political Science and Law. After breakfast we toured the area around campus and visited the library. Many students are focused on preparation for the law exams taking place soon, similar to our bar exams.
Next we walked outside the campus where there are small shops, some tiny and built over the sidewalk, selling fruit and plastic household items, as well as dozens and dozens of small restaurants selling noodles, soups, dumplings and barbecue. I think I could try a different kind of noodle every day and never sample the many regional specialties.
We then met with the Associate Dean, Chuong Lu, and with Lijun (Lily) Luo, executive director of the ICMA China Center. We learned firsthand about the excellence of the advice to be flexible. I was told that Wednesday morning I will attend a conference and should be prepared to make some remarks about "immigrant and poor workers, environmental law, and legal access." I will enjoy figuring out what to say.
Below are photos of breakfast, a couple of the students at breakfast, and the group of us on the steps of the law library (a serious and imposing building, as The Law should probably be).
