Over the past fifty years the City of Sugar Land, TX has seen their population become one of the most diverse in Texas and in the US. Lacking an effective multi-cultural inclusion program that matched their growing diversity needs, the city created two member groups, the City Manager’s Multi-Cultural Advisory Team (CMMCAT) and the Employee Multi-Cultural Task Force (ETF). These groups worked on hosting informational sessions with other multi-cultural communities, sharing those sessions with their own community, and made a point of including multi-cultural communities in city events. The program helped teach city employees more about the community they work for, engaged more citizens in local activities, improved communication across varying language barriers in the community, and enhanced public safety.
