The city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was nominated to the 2005 ICMA Annual Awards Program for its successful brownfields redevelopment. In desperate need of economic development but with no place to grow, creative Deputy City Manager Pat DiGiovanni helped establish the Brownfield Authority. The Brownfield Authority, a private-public entity, took control of local brownfields and dealt with the environmental issues up-front. The success of the authority can be measured in a myriad of new development and numerous accolades.
