This report describes steps that states and localities can take to encourage more community-centered schools -- those that are centrally-located, jointly share facilities, and fit well within a neighborhood. Produced through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Helping Johnny Walk to School report suggests policy changes to help ensure that the educational, health, environmental, community, and fiscal considerations are weighed by the entire community when making school closing, consolidation, and site selection decisions.
