The Alexandria, Virginia (128,000), Heritage Trail takes walkers and bicyclists along a 23-mile route, past 58 stops and 110 sites showcasing 9,000 years of Alexandria history. The trail is divided into 10 segments, each with its own theme. One of these segments highlights sites associated with the family of Robert E. Lee, while another takes visitors through an area where slaves lived and a nearby area inhabited in the 19th century by free African Americans. Other features of the trail include churches, cemeteries, Civil War sites, an old stone railroad bridge, and the homes of former presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon. The trail uses existing roads and paths, and no new construction was needed. The Friends of Alexandria Archeology have put together a trail guidebook that is available at local bookstores and through the Internet, and the local transportation department is putting up markers with directions to the sites. Descriptions and maps of each site on the trail are also available on the Internet.
