ICMA implemented the AMUPREV project to promote municipal-led violence prevention strategies through the development of regional peer knowledge networks, and to provide training and technical assistance to local governments and community groups, in coordination with national police efforts. Among the project’s key accomplishments was the establishment of better citizen-police relations and trust in local government, which ICMA helped foster through municipal partnerships between Central American and U.S. cities that showcased best practices in multi-stakeholder collaboration to reduce crime and violence. AMUPREV worked directly with 29 municipalities in five countries (the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama), and with municipal associations in seven countries (including Costa Rica, and Belize).
