In the midst of the home foreclosure crisis the Town of Dedham, Massachusetts implemented a new community outreach initiative. Dubbed the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” Program, it aimed to connect residents to each other and inform them of the wide variety of assistance available to avoid foreclosure. Partnering with local clergy, the local government was striving to reach out to citizens experiencing financial difficulties by pooling local resources and involving private and non-profit actors such as major banks, credit managers, home fuel assistance groups, foreclosure prevention counselors, food pantries, volunteer real estate brokers and real estate attorneys, and health insurers. The innovative nature of the community partnership between the churches and Town of Dedham generated regional and national media attention, including coverage by a Boston television station and National Public Radio.
