On June 23, 2003, the city of Linden, New Jersey (39,400), will break ground for a new 11-story building that will provide 126 handicapped-accessible, one-bedroom apartments for seniors as well as a public library. The new building will replace two buildings owned by the Linden housing authority and an underused public library. The mayor offered the public library’s property to the housing authority for $1 a year for 100 years. In exchange, the housing authority is including 2,000 square feet of space on the ground floor of the new building for a smaller library facility. The library will have a separate entrance to preserve security. The building’s $15 million cost will be funded through bonds, and the housing authority hopes to obtain additional funding through the county and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
