After 140 years, the sewers in historic German Village in Columbus, Ohio (711,470), needed fixing. The city did not consider replacing the sewers since this would have required digging up the historic brick streets that help make the area so attractive. Instead, the city used a new trenchless technique called cured-in-place pipe to repair the sewers. Public works employees reached the sewers through manholes and cleaned them using pressurized water. They then placed resin-based liner material in the sewer line. The liner rehabilitates the sewer structurally and seals leaks while keeping out of the system excess water that can cause overflows and backups in nearby basements. The sewer was repaired in sections to minimize disruption, and employees tried to spend no more than 12 hours repairing each section. The cost of rehabilitation has been lower than the cost of rebuilding the sewer would have been.
