A think-outside-the-box partnership between Avondale Public Library and the One Step Beyond (OSB) organization uses library space to enhance practical job and life skills for developmentally challenged adults. The creation of the Turning Page Bookstore advances opportunities for program participants to gain independence through job training in a safe, controlled, real-life environment. Job and life skills practiced include mature workplace behavior, customer service, inventory management and effective communication between fellow workers and the public. The bookstore sells used books, artwork, ceramics, jewelry and small culinary treats. Most of the items are handmade by the One Step Beyond participants.
