To reduce the amount of waste going into its landfill, King County, Washington (1,737,000), encourages residents to give away or sell at low prices their unwanted furniture, electronics, and other items. The county allows residents to advertise, at no charge, goods that are offered for up to $99 (many are offered for free) on the Online Exchange, a sort of Internet-based flea market. Those interested in obtaining a used item can browse through such categories as appliances, automotive, books, home decor, and sporting goods to view ads and obtain telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of those offering the goods. The county spent less than $1,500 to develop the site, which requires a few hours a week to monitor and ensure that no inappropriate words are used and no goods are advertised that are worth more than $99 (since the purpose is to reuse goods that would otherwise end up in the landfill). In its first four months, the site hosted more than 800 listings, with about 400 successful exchanges.
