The City of Winter Park, Florida is a small Orange County suburban community with a population of approximately twenty-five thousand residents. Recently the city government began implementing many strategic initiatives in cooperation of the Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF), a private, not-for-profit organization supporting programs that improve the health of youth, older adults, and the community at large. These initiatives include maintaining a safe and healthy environment, providing extensive recreational opportunities for residents of all ages, assuring bicycle and pedestrian safety, maintaining ten acres of park space per 1,000 residents, and aggressively pursuing the city’s “green” plan. To meet these goals, the WPHF launched their own plan, dubbed the “Healthy Communities” initiative, which was an effort to inspire community projects to effect environmental change and encourage healthy behaviors. As a result, two new recreational areas opened, the Howell Branch Preserve and the Lake Island Fitness Experience. A new brochure titled “Healthy Fun & Fitness Guide to Winter Park” has been widely distributed. A fall analysis study has been conducted with the WPHF awarding a grant to the Senior Resource Alliance in order to coordinate a multi-faceted falls-prevention pilot program which includes in-home assessments, balance classes, home modification tips, nutrition counseling, medication management services and regular meetings with the Central Florida Falls Prevention Coalition. Two auto pulse devices were delivered to the Winter Park’ Fire-Rescue Department. Finally, a large number of bicycle racks have been installed throughout the city.
