The Town of Farmville is seeking a qualified professional with preferable local government experience to serve as Director of Public Works. The Public Works Department diligently serves the Town and takes on a diverse array of responsibilities. Candidates should have an exemplary work history and proven record of their ability to plan and direct in all areas of engineering, public works, or the like. The Director of Public Works, under the general supervision of the Town Manager, performs complex professional and administrative work, in the planning and directing of street/sidewalk construction and maintenance, water/sewer construction and maintenance, water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, sanitation and recycling, traffic engineering, buildings and grounds, horticulture, and mechanics.

This position requires a Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with a major in civil or environmental engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. The candidate should have three to five years of increasingly responsible technical and managerial experience in engineering, public works, building construction with project management experience, or public utilities; at least one year of supervisory experience in the direction of small and medium size crews or workers; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The candidate must possess a valid State of Virginia Driver’s License. Possession of a valid State of Virginia commercial driver’s license, VDOT work zone certificate, First Aid/CPR certifications, Engineer In Training (EIT) Certification, Professional Engineer (PE) are preferred.

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

-Direct all work functions of the department through subordinate supervisors.
-Plan, assign, coordinate a wide variety of public works construction, maintenance and operating tasks (streets, traffic control systems, cemetery, park, parking lots).
-Responsible for water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, refuse collection services.
-Provide engineering knowledge, specification, experience, evaluation, and inspection on street construction and paving, existing water and sewer lines and their extension, and other facilities being constructed for providing or using municipal services.
-Establish departmental budgets and monitor expenditures.
-Determine the amount of personnel and equipment necessary for each project.
-Recommend selection and purchase of equipment and materials.
-Direct the maintenance of equipment and vehicles through the mechanic foreman.
-Participate in the selection of new employees, promotions, and the performance and evaluation of employees.
-Direct programs involving snow, ice, or flood.
-Review major construction proposals, prints, and specifications prior to construction from service facilities standpoint.
-Continual evaluation of services and public complaints.
-Answer a wide variety of correspondence.
-Coordinate all activities closely with the Town Manager.
-Perform other job duties as assigned.
