Building & Parks Superintendent

This position is a supervisory position with the responsibility to oversee a variety of city building-related needs and to manage all the city parks and parklands. The Building and Parks Superintendent will lead a team in support of all buildings, facilities, and parks the City owns or has responsibility for to ensure they are safe, visually pleasing, and well maintained. This position reports to the Public Works Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITES
Responsibilities
• Plans and directs the oversight and management of the City's owned or responsible parks and recreation facilities, projects, programs and activities.
• Establishes and implements operating policies and procedures for upkeep, maintenance, and use of parks and facilities.
• Represents the community of Gretna by maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming park environments for all.
• Manages the budget for Building and Parks including overseeing the capital improvement plan (CIP). Submits requests for resources including new and replacement assets and personnel.
• Coordinates day-to-day operations, including weekday and weekend staffing requirements and activity schedules for park maintenance.
• Supervises assigned staff ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and practices.
• Ensures all staff are trained in the proper use and handling of equipment and correct safety practices.
• Manages contracts with service providers and sponsorship agreements for compliance.
• Conducts regular performance reviews of assigned staff.
• Develops and implements short and long-term plans for the care and use of the City’s lands, resources, and facilities.
• Ensures safety protocols are established and followed, and emergency procedures are in place to handle accidents or other risks to employees and patrons.
• Manages contractors to ensure efficient and effective operations and fulfillment of contract obligations.
• Ensures restrooms, concession stands, water fountains, etc. are opened or winterized seasonally.
• Coordinates major repairs and maintenance items for City parks, parklands, buildings and facilities.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with City officials, City Administrator, fellow employees, patrons, contractors, and members of the public.
• Maintains confidential information.
• Works a varying schedule, including situations which require weekends or unusual hours.
• Performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience in park management, park and recreation facility work, and/or ground maintenance operations, specifically in an urban setting. Additional experience managing grounds for visitors at a municipal or corporate level is desired; and
• Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Horticulture, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, or related field; and
• 2 years supervisory experience, or any combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, experience, and skills.
• Must be willing to obtain further education, training, and certification as deemed appropriate and within a period established by the employer.
