The Gresham, Oregon (90,205), Resource Efficiency Assistance to Businesses (GREAT Businesses) program helps businesses identify ways to conserve energy, prevent waste, and recycle. When a business agrees to participate, the program coordinator schedules a site visit with the manager. The program often identifies simple things that the manager might not have considered, such as opening the window shades to reduce the need for artificial light. The program also provides water-saving devices and rebates for low-flow toilets. Businesses that might benefit from a more thorough energy audit are referred to the local electric utility. The program coordinator follows up with participating businesses on a regular basis to offer advice and see if they are following the recommendations. Businesses that meet a list of criteria receive a certificate and recognition at a city council meeting. The program is supported by a grant from the state department of environmental quality.
